This robot only needs a single artificial intelligence model to master human movements
While there is a lot of work to do, Tedrake says all the evidence so far shows that the approaches used in LLMs also work for robots. “I think it’s changing everything,” she says.
Robotics progress has become more challenging for late late, with video videos that do business that do complex tasks, such as loading the refrigerator or pulling the trash with ease. However, YouTube clips can be captivating, and humanitarian robots tend to be used remotely, be carefully planned, or trained to perform a single task in highly controlled situations.
The new Atlas work is a big sign that robots are starting to experience the kind of equivalent advances in the robotics, which eventually led to the general language models that produced us in the field of artificial intelligence. Finally, such advances can give us robots that are able to work in a wide range of dirty environments and are able to quickly learn new skills – from welding pipes to espresso making – no extensive training.
“This is definitely one step forward,” says Ken Goldberg, a robotic Berkeley who receives a budget from TRI but does not participate with Atlas. “Coordination of the legs and arms is a great job.”
However, Goldberg says the idea of emerging robot behavior must be treated carefully. He says robots may show skills that seem to be newer than they are really, the robots may show. He adds that it is useful to know the details of how many times a robot is successful and what ways they fail during the experiments. TRI is already transparent with the work done in the LBMS and may release more data on the new model.
Whether the simple scaling of data used to teach robot models will always open the behavior of the emergence is an open question. In a discussion in May at the International Robotics and Automation Conference in Atlanta, Goldberg and others warned that engineering methods would also play an important role.
Tedrake, for one, is convinced that the robotic is approaching a point of inflation-a manner that allows for more real use of humans and other robots. “I think we have to get these robots out of the world and start the real job,” she says.
