The mayor of Chicago calls on the National Guard to “the wrong solution”
The mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson (D) said that sending the National Guard to his city is “the wrong solution to a real problem” in a new opinion article for the New York Times.
“Reducing crime rates here does not require an occupation of our city by armed members of the National Guard, as the White House continues to threaten us. Residents of Chicago, including the survivors of violence, spoke against such a severe measure.”
He added: “Sending the National Guard is the wrong solution to a real problem. If President Trump listens to the city leaders, he will realize that Chicago has just suffered from standard killings, which makes this summer the safest since the 1960s, and as a result of effective cooperation between societies and law enforcement.”
On Sunday, President Trump said he “will not go to war” with Chicago despite his recent social media position that showed Windy at the end of the world and hinted at the imminent war.
When asked if he was “threatening to go to war with Chicago,” Trump told reporters, “We will not go to war. We will clean our cities.”
“We will clean them, so they don’t kill five people at the end of each week. This is not a war. This is sound.”
Last week, Trump said it was a matter when, not if, he would have transferred the National Guard to Chicago, citing the city’s problems violently.
Trump previously said: “Well, we go. I didn’t say when. We go,” Trump said previously. “See, I have a commitment. This is not a political thing. I have a commitment.”
The hill arrived at the White House for comment.
