The explosion at the US steel factory made two people die, 10 injured
Some explosions on Monday at a US steel factory near Pittsburgh killed two people and injured 10 others, according to the company and local authorities.
The explosion at Clairton Coke Works – part of the extensive industrial complex along the Mononghela River – took place exactly before 11.00 ET (1500 GMT). Firefighters against fire and thick smoke that stepped from the factory, owned by US Steel, a subsidiary of Nippon Steel.
Initially, two people were reported missing. One person was found and transported to a local hospital, the Assistant Supervisory Assistant for the Regency of Allegheny, Victor Joseph at the afternoon briefing.
Other people, who have been lost, were found dead after a broad search and rescue effort, US Steel said in a statement that was emailed to Reuters on Monday night.
There is no news about the possible causes of the explosion.
The investigation of the explosion will be a “technical investigation that takes time,” Joseph said.
David Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer of US Steel, said in a statement that the company worked with local authorities to find the cause.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro posted on X that there were several explosions in the factory and that his government was related to local officials.
“The scene is still active, and people nearby must follow the directions of local authorities,” he wrote when the employee was lost.
The severity of the injury is unknown, but the news account says that some people are taken to the hospital burning unit.
Mayor Clairton Rich Lattanzi said it was a terrible day for the city, about 20 miles (32 km) in the south of Pittsburgh, which has long been known as America’s Steel City.
US Steel has produced steel in the area since the end of the 19th century, but in recent decades, the industry has declined, which leads to the closure of the factory and restructuring.
In June, Nippon Steel, the largest steel maker in Japan, closed the acquisition of $ 14.9 billion from US Steel after the 18 -month struggle to obtain the approval of the US government for the agreement, which faced supervision due to national security issues.
While air quality monitors do not detect harmful increases in sulfur dioxide after Monday explosion, residents within a distance of 1 mile from the factory are advised to stay indoors, close and door windows, regulate HVAC systems for recirculation, and avoid interesting activities in the outside air, the executive of Allegheny County County Innamorato at Briefing.
Clairton Coke Works is the largest coke manufacturing facility in the United States, employing around 1,300 workers. It operates 10 coke oven batteries, which produce around 4.3 million tons of coke per year.
Coke is produced by heating coal at high temperatures. This is used in a blast furnace as part of the steel making process.
