Wired asked the popular Yoga Yoga Sara Beth teacher for top tips on buying the best yoga mattress:

The thicker is not better. You still want to support your balance by having a solid connection to the ground under your own, so target 3 to 5 mm thick. You can always add more cushion to your knees in the center, but the cushion over the front and back, where your hands and feet go, can disrupt your balance.

Look for good. For hot yoga or sweating people, be sure to stain the mat when soaking. The washable design is more hygienic. A micro -fiber mat can be placed in the washing machine (manufacturers recommended) or you can choose a “yoga towel” that you cover with it before wiping and washing after your session.

Take a travel mat. For holidays, a light, lightweight, 0.059 -inch (1.5mm) can be folded or rotated in your suitcase. They work well on the hotel room carpet, but if you need more cushion, you can always drag the towel with your knees. I also practiced yoga in my hotel room just with a bath towel like a mattress.

Easy the exercise. If you are planning to use your mattress like a gym for Pilates, weights, yoga and HIIT, then invest in a 5-feet-of-8-foot (such as gorilla mat) that should not move. These are typically a little heavier and tighter that will help you stay in your place while moving.
