Air traffic workers know that accusations of coordinated activities, hospital illnesses, or informal workplace measures that could violate long-standing bargaining agreements with the government are now especially dangerous because federal officials are threatening public sector unions. The Trump administration abruptly terminated the TSA Workers Committee Agreement in March before a lower court halted the action in June. Workers worry that absenteeism, even if necessary, could have long-term consequences on their unit and thus on their working conditions.
The National Air Traffic Controllers Association did not respond to Wired’s request for comment. But a pop-up on the union’s website says it “does not approve of, does not support, or any Federal employee engages in or confirms coordinated activity that negatively impacts” the capability of the National Aerospace System.
Jones, the TSA representative and union leader, says his group does not regulate comorbidities. But if the lack of pay means “it’s not a commute” they may have to call it a day.
“We are sick and tired of politicians passing through Washington,” Jones adds.
