LG has made several improvements to this generation of panels and it really shows in the numbers. It’s one of the brightest displays we’ve tested, with only one major competitor, the Sony Bravia 9 QLED, beating it in terms of raw brightness. That means top-notch HDR performance, without some of the compromises you’d normally make for QLED screens to achieve that brightness.

Colors are also excellent, bringing to life the deep greens and blues that some TVs can struggle with. They dress up your favorite comedy stars just as well as they do action movie explosions and crashes. Processing and upscaling are also top notch, unless all of your media is sourced from the best.

Combine this high brightness with rich, vibrant colors, and the result is a TV that looks stunning in any movie genre. As our reviewer, Ryan Vaniata, put it when describing the Thunderstorm from the start Mad Max: Fury Road, “Every fiery bolt and crash burns with a white-hot hiss, and almost overwhelms my senses even in watching the day.”

The only real draw here is the streaming interface, an upgraded version of LG’s WebOS, which doesn’t have the simplicity and functionality of other options like Google TV. The remote is also a bit confusing and lacks some basic functions like the mute key or the input key, both of which require other combinations of key presses. The good news here is that if it really bothers you, you can always switch to a dedicated broadcast box.

If you’ve got the cash, the LG G5 OLED is one of our favorite TVs and it’s worth taking advantage of this 20% discount while you can.
