Oregon Governor of Trump: “There is no need for the military forces” in Portland

Oregon Tina Cotik (D) said on Saturday that the city of Portland does not need the National Guard soldiers to help protect the migration and customs enforcement facilities (ICE), as President Trump ordered earlier in the day.

“In my direct talks with President Trump and [Homeland Security] “I have contemplated the Secretary Naim, I was very clear with them that Portland and the state of Oregon believe in the rule of law, and we can manage our local public safety needs,” Cotik said at a press conference on Saturday morning.

“There is no rebellion. There is no threat to national security, and there is no need for the military forces in our main city.”

Earlier in the day, the president suggested that the city was under siege.

“At the request of the Minister of Internal Security, Christie Nom, the Minister of War, Beit Higseth, directed to provide all the forces necessary to protect Portland destroyed in the war, and any of our ice facilities under the siege of the attack by Antiva, and other local terrorists,” the president was in fact a social position.

“I also authorized the full power, if necessary,” Trump added.

His comments follow a violent attack on a field office of the ice in Texas earlier this week, where a detainee was killed and two others were injured.

However, Cotik said that Portland does not suffer from alleged threats to safety and urged Trump to redirect the army towards the areas of need.

“Members of the military service must be devoted to real emergency situations. Members of the National Guard in Oregon, their mission is to stand up and protect Oregon, and they will do this every day, but they do not need the city. They do not need here,” Cotik repeated during the press conference on Saturday.

Oregon governor also reported that she had contacted the governor of Gavin New Zalif and the JB Pritzker (D-ILL) to assess how they responded to pushing the White House to deploy soldiers in their states without prior notice. On Saturday, a survey of NPR-PIPSOS, published on Saturday, found a number of Americans opposing the deployment of Trump’s National Guard to some cities.

“The administration has refused to clarify what it means when they say they will spread the full power against our city and our citizens,” Cotik told the public.

MP Suzanne Bonamisi said it was not sure why Trump sent the military forces to Portland.

“I was at the ICE facility two days ago. I was in Portland yesterday on the eastern side to attend a meeting and last night for an event. I did not see anywhere one indication that we need military forces here,” Bonamishi said at the press conference with Cotik.

“I strongly oppose this procedure by the president, and I thank the ruler and the mayor for their words.”

By the end of August, Portland police recorded a strict attack, 2595 robberies and 25 murders, according to city data. During the same time period in 2024, the city recorded 2060 strict attacks, 2,924 robberies and 50 murders.

The Trump administration’s intention is to deploy the soldiers to the city, the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles, DC and Memphis, Tin, earlier this year. Soldiers were sent to the cities led by Democrats, which sometimes led to protests.
