Munich Airport announced positive interim results
- Record cargo volumes: Air freight volume rose by ten percent to 182,000 tons, exceeding pre-pandemic levels and setting a new record for Munich Airport.
- Despite the rise in traffic, punctuality improved from 58 to over 75 percent, placing Munich among the top three in Europe for on-time performance.
- The deployment of modern CT scanners at security checkpoints – which was implemented entirely in Terminal 2 and partially in Terminal 1 – has streamlined the screening process, with 95 percent of passengers being cleared in less than ten minutes.
- Management Comments: CEO Joost Lammers and General Manager Thomas Hof Andersson highlighted the airport’s international appeal, efficiency gains, commitment to innovation and passenger comfort as key drivers behind Munich’s success.
Even before its official end on October 25, the summer flight schedule period at Munich Airport is already showing impressive development. Between March 31 and October 12, the airport recorded a five percent growth in passenger numbers and flight movements compared to the previous year. Intercontinental traffic in particular developed dynamically, increasing by eight percent. The hugely popular links to the United States, used by a total of 2.1 million passengers, played an important role in this.
Not only is Munich growing above the German average in percentage terms, but with an additional 1.4 million passengers in the January-September 2025 period, it also has the largest passenger growth among airports in Germany, Austria and Switzerland compared to the previous year. August was the busiest month across Europe. According to ACI Europe, the international association of European airports, Munich Airport showed the fourth highest growth rate among the largest European airports this month.
The route network has also been further expanded in the summer 2025 schedule: with destinations in Germany and 67 other countries, the range of services offered is more diverse than ever before. 84 airlines provided regular flights to 217 destinations from Munich.
New additions to the flight schedule included flights to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific, Calgary, Orlando and Windhoek with Discover Airlines, and Shymkent with SCAT Airlines. Lufthansa flew to Oradea for the first time, and Discover Airlines took off to Bodø. The connections launched by Vietnam Airlines to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in October 2024 continued in the summer and increased to five weekly frequencies. Since 1 September, Paderborn/Lippstadt has also been served 17 times a week by Skyhub PAD.
Munich Airport also recorded very strong growth in air cargo during this period. Compared to the previous year, freight volume increased by ten percent, reaching a total of 182 thousand tons. With this volume of cargo, Munich Airport set a new record and is now above the 2019 level.
Joost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport: “The current figures confirm the high attractiveness of Munich Airport for passengers and airlines alike. With the continued expansion of our international route network, we are strengthening our role as one of the leading air traffic hubs in Europe.”
The positive development in punctuality is particularly encouraging: despite the increase in traffic volume, punctuality rose from 58 percent to more than 75 percent compared to the 2024 summer flight schedule. Despite external factors such as thunderstorms and, more recently, operational limitations of the airport due to the sighting of drones, Munich Airport ranks among the three largest central airports in Europe by Where punctuality is met.
The increasing use of modern CT scanners at security checkpoints significantly contributes to speeding up passenger processing procedures at Munich Airport. Since April 2025, the central passenger screening point in Terminal 2 has been completely converted to innovative CT technology. Five CT scanners are also in use in Terminal 1. The new technology not only provides a significant increase in safety and comfort for passengers, but also enables higher security productivity. Ninety-five percent of passengers pass through security checkpoints in less than ten minutes, and 90 percent in less than five minutes.
“The significant improvement in punctuality and efficiency gains achieved with modern CT scanners demonstrate that we are constantly improving our operations,” explains Thomas Hof Andersson, General Manager Aviation and Operations at Munich Airport. “In the coming months, we will continue to expand the use of innovative technologies in order to continuously improve the travel experience for our passengers at the hub of excellence in Munich.”
