Iga Istanbul is raising the tape with sustainability targets

Paid the principle of benefiting from technology for the benefit of people and the environment, Iga Istanbul Airport issued a sustainability report in 2024.

The report has been prepared using a dual material analysis*, and an evaluation of the sustainability of companies from two perspectives (the effect of materialism and financial materials), to assess the importance of environmental, social and governance issues (ESG).

By placing sustainability at the heart of its strategic plans and operations, Iga Istanbul Airport completed 2024 with greenhouse gas emissions by 1.4 % than the previous year and 10.5 % lower than predictions at the end of the year. Committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050, Iga also reviewed the 2030 renewable energy goal from 50 % to 90 %.

As part of this commitment, the Solar Power Station project in Escareheh (SPP) is subject to the airport, covering about 3 million square meters with an investment of 212 million euros and a planned capacity of 199.32 megawatts. The factory is expected to generate 340 million kilowatt hours of energy annually. Once it operates in the last quarter of 2025, Iga Istanbul will become the first major airport in the world to meet its entire electrical needs through solar energy.

Scientific cooperation with Tübitak for climate flexibility

To ensure that its operations are flexible amid changing climate cases, Iga evaluates future scenarios based on scientific data. In cooperation with the Tübitak Marmara Research Center (MAM), Iga launched the adaptation plan with climate change at Istanbul Airport. This initiative uses regional climate simulation to analyze the potential effect of climate change on airport operations, risk assessment, and develop long -term adjustment strategies.

Seahaattin Bilgen, CEO of Iga Istanbul, stressed that the sustainability report is not only working as a communication tool but also as a way to share learning and fields to improve. He expressed his pride in leadership in global aviation with best sustainability practices.

Bilgen also recalled the airport’s commitment to shift in flying by signing the “Aviation4all Declaration” in Athens in December 2024, as one of 43 leading organizations.

“Given our prominent role in both the global aviation economy and the Türkiye economy, we take great responsibility: to contribute to building a sustainable future,” said Bilgin.

“We are dealing with this task in a multi -faceted way. We give priority to environmental sustainability projects to reduce our carbon fingerprint, improve energy efficiency, and use natural resources more effectively. Through socially responsible projects, we aim to enhance the quality of life for a wide range of stakeholders – from our employees to local communities. This comprehensive approach allows us to work in a way that exceeds the traditional expectations of the airport.
