East Midlands Airport is upgrading its runway and cargo infrastructure in £120m winter works
- East Midlands Airport is undertaking major infrastructure upgrades this winter as part of its £120 million investment programme.
- Key projects include the complete replacement of Taxiway Bravo, the redesign of the central apron to add four new aircraft stands, and the installation of advanced lighting systems in all aircraft aprons. These improvements are implemented during scheduled runway closures during the day to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption.
- The upgrades aim to enhance safety and operational capacity and support long-term growth, especially in the airport’s expanding cargo operations.
Significant improvements are being made to critical parts of East Midlands Airport’s infrastructure during a series of runway closures over the winter.
As part of the airport’s ongoing £120 million investment programme, major upgrades will be made to lighting, taxiways and the central apron (where passenger aircraft park). General maintenance of the runway, taxiways and aprons is also scheduled for Wednesdays throughout the winter.
Following consultation with airlines and other airport stakeholders, East Midlands Airport is taking the opportunity to conduct these works – which would normally be carried out overnight – during daylight hours. This allows more work to be done safely and efficiently, with minimal disruption to passenger and cargo operations.
The infrastructure upgrades will enhance the airport’s operational capabilities and future-proof its airport for years to come. These developments form part of a broader investment strategy that reflects the airport’s commitment to safety, efficiency and development to meet evolving aviation requirements, including significant growth in cargo operations. Key projects include:
Replace Taxway Bravo on a large scale: This vital artery of the airport plays a vital role in the movement of aircraft between the runway and the western apron used by heavy cargo aircraft. The works will include an extensive upgrade to the taxiway surface and supporting infrastructure, ensuring it meets the latest operational standards and can accommodate a wide range of aircraft types.
Central Plaza Redesign: The comprehensive redesign of the Central Plaza will reconfigure the layout to optimize space and improve delivery times. The work will lead to the construction of four additional platforms for passenger aircraft, bringing the total number to 28, to support the growing airline operations.
Installation of improved lighting in all airport aprons: Advanced lighting systems will be installed in the east, west and center of the airport apron in line with international best practices in airport management. Improved airport ground lighting and center lighting will play a pivotal role in improving visibility, guidance and safety of aircraft during taxi, parking and push-back operations.
Other works include replacing and upgrading electrical substations, general maintenance of the runway, taxiways and aprons and upgrading hydrants and drainage systems.
Brian McCoubrey, East Midlands Airport Asset Development Director, said: “These winter works are not just about maintenance, they are an investment in the future of the airport, ensuring it continues to operate as a vital hub for passengers and cargo across the UK and beyond.”
“By investing in taxiways, aprons and lighting systems, the airport is strengthening its role as a major regional hub and ensuring it remains competitive, flexible and ready to meet the demands of modern aviation.”
