CPK invites a tender to design and build a tunnel and railway station under the new airport
- Poland’s Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) has launched a tender to design and build a six-kilometre-long railway tunnel and subway station beneath the new airport, with applications open until 12 December 2025.
- The project, divided into two main sections, will connect Warsaw, Gdańsk, Katowice and Lodz via high-speed lines and is scheduled for completion in 2031, with contracts to be awarded in early 2027.
- The tunnel and station will be integrated with the airport terminal, enabling seamless rail and air transport operations and form part of Poland’s wider high-speed ‘Y’ network due to be built by 2035.
The port of Centralny Komunikaszej (CPK) – a new multimodal transport hub under development in central Poland – has announced a tender for the design and construction of a tunnel and railway station, including a platform hall, located beneath CPK Airport.
Applications for the competitive dialogue can be submitted until December 12, 2025. The contract is scheduled to be awarded in the first quarter of 2027, with completion scheduled for 2031.
The tunnel and underground station are among the key elements of the new airport, providing strategic rail links across Poland. The purchasing process is divided into two parts, with up to five bidders selected in each. The selected contractor will deliver the design and construction works for the tunnel and station complex.
“After launching the station tender, we are moving forward with another major procurement process – this time for the tunnel and the railway station under the airport. We are looking for a contractor with proven experience in large-scale tunneling and infrastructure projects in Poland,” said Maciej Lasek, CPK State Commissioner and Deputy Minister of Infrastructure.
The total length of the tunnel will be approximately six kilometers and its volume will be 3.5 million cubic metres, making it one of the largest structures of its kind in Poland – significantly exceeding the volume of the Limanowa railway tunnel or the S3 road tunnels near Kamina Gora. Running along the east-west axis, it will carry railway lines 5, 85 and 88, connecting directly with Warsaw to the east and Gdańsk, Katowice and Łódź to the west.
“The tunnel is an integral part of the high-speed line No. 85 connecting CPK Airport with Warsaw and Łódź. The station will form a fully integrated part of the station, enabling smooth and fast transfers between rail and air,” said Dr. Filip Czarnecki, CEO of CPK.
The tender covers two main plots:
- Part One: Design and construction of the eastern and central section of the tunnel, including the station.
- Part Two: Design and construction of the western section and the intersection area.
Each batch also includes optional ranges for track systems and UTB equipment for short-distance passenger and freight movement.
“The airport station and CPK railway tunnel will feature a modern design and cutting-edge technologies, ensuring fast and comfortable passenger transfers,” added Piotr Rachwalski, member of the CPK Board of Management for Railway Investments.
Bids will be evaluated on the basis of price, methodology and guarantee terms. Contracts are expected to be awarded in early 2027.
According to the current schedule, the railway station and the tunnel under CPK Airport will be opened by the end of 2032, along with the high-speed railway line between Warsaw and Łódź. The remaining sections of the national high-speed network “Y” – from Łódź to Wrocław and from Śradz to Poznań – are expected to follow by 2035.
