Coal production curbs in China could be further tightened towards the end of the year, leading miners say

China’s curbs on coal production could be further tightened towards the end of 2025, making it unlikely there will be an increase in output at the world’s largest coal producer, a China Coal Energy 601898 official said in a results summary.

China is limiting coal production following an unexpected increase in supply in the first half of the year that weighed on prices, China Coal said earlier.

The country’s state asset regulator has held meetings with industry players calling for prices to be kept at a “reasonable” and “stable” level, added Li Xueyuan, an official in China Coal Energy’s marketing department.

Li expects supply and demand to be relatively balanced in the near future as hot winter seasons favor coal consumption, he said.

China Coal Energy is a subsidiary of the country’s fourth largest producer, China Coal Group.

China’s coal production fell 1.8% year-on-year in September to 411.51 million metric tons, statistics bureau data showed, due to ongoing restrictions.
However, cumulatively, production in the first nine months still rose 2% compared to last year’s period of 3.57 billion metric tons, driven by an increase in the first semester.
