Air Niugini receives the first Airbus A220

Air Niugini, the national carrier of Pabua Guinea, has delivered its first A220-300 aircraft, on a lease contract from Azorra. The airline becomes the twenty -fifth world operator of the A220, who is now flying with transport companies on five continents.

The plane, which was called “Popular Palos”, left Airbus’s final collection in Mirabel for the delivery trip to Port Murcby, with scheduled stops in Vancouver, Honolulu and Figi. Delivery is an important landmark in the Air Niugini fleet update program, where eight A220-100 is rented for a direct arrangement with Airbus and three A220-300s from Azorra.

The Aircraft Special Livery represents the fiftieth anniversary of the independence of Papua New Guinea. The complex design of the Airbus team consisting of 120 painters worked on the application of 11 distinct colors using a technique with a good air.

This delivery highlights the strong position of the A220 in its object, as it combines the longest range (6700 km) with the slightest fuel consumption in its category-25 percent less than previous aircraft. The A220-100, which serves the seat market 100-135, is an important component of this modern aviation family, while the largest A220-300 is designed for the seat sector 120-160. The structure of the plane combines 40 percent of advanced materials, leading to a lighter plane. The A220 also includes improved aerodynamics with the newly designed nose and tail cone, both of which contribute to reducing clouds. In fact, the A220 contains the smallest area attached to the fuselage – the surface is in direct contact with the air – in its class.

The A220 is operated by the last GTF ™ engines from the Partt & Whitney, which provides a 25 percent decrease in carbon emissions per seat compared to the previous generation plane. As with all Airbus aircraft, the A220 is already able to operate with sustainable flying fuel by up to 50 percent, with a target for all aircraft to be able to work by up to 100 percent by 2030.

As of the end of August 2025, Airbus got more than 940 requests for A220 from more than 30 customers, and has submitted more than 440 aircraft. The A220 is already flying on more than 1,800 roads for more than 480 destinations all over the world, confirming its main location in the small corridor market.
