CIMAC and MBF Second Joint White Paper “The Environment of Battery Use in Deep Sea Shipping”

CIMAC and the Maritime Battery Forum have published a second paper on the environmental impact of batteries in deep sea shipping.

This paper reviews the regulatory framework for battery use in deep-sea shipping, including requirements from flag states, classification societies, and industry standards. Although the foundation is strong, gaps remain especially in operational practices and crew training. To address these challenges, this paper outlines clear responsibilities for training and proposes practical recommendations on how regulators, shipowners and industry bodies can collaborate to ensure the safe and effective integration of batteries at sea.

After analyzing the use cases and application areas of batteries in a joint whitepaper by CIMAC and the Maritime Battery Forum entitled “Environment for the Use of Batteries in Deep Sea Shipping”, published in 2024, the next step is to identify the current challenges that prohibit the application of battery systems in deep sea shipping in terms of regulations and safety.

The current regulatory landscape for maritime batteries has been thoroughly analyzed, and it is concluded that current regulations provide adequate support for the design, installation, and testing of batteries for applications in deep sea shipping. However, a lack of crew training regulations was identified. Therefore, the impact on crew and crew training requirements of battery-powered vessels was investigated and analyzed to develop an overview and recommendations of crew training requirements for ship owners, operators, flag states and maritime authorities.

CIMAC is a leading global non-profit association promoting the development of ship propulsion, rail propulsion and power generation. This association consists of National Member Associations and Corporate Members in America, Asia and Europe. CIMAC provides a technical exchange forum with all parties interested in piston engines, gas turbine systems, non-shaftline propulsion systems, automation and control, system integration and digitalization solutions.

CIMAC acts as a global discussion platform through various events, namely the CIMAC Congress (every three years), CIMAC Circles, CASCADES and web seminars. Content related work develops around the CIMAC Strategy and Working Group which produces publications on a variety of topics.

CIMAC has been granted consultative status with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Maritime Battery Forum is a global non-profit association connecting the battery industry with the maritime industry. MBF’s vision is to be a leader and neutral supporter of maritime battery technology globally. MBF is on a mission to accelerate the deployment of safe maritime battery solutions to enable emissions reductions. MBF members are battery manufacturers, users and experts from Europe, Asia and North America, who share knowledge, learning and insights on topics such as battery safety, technology, applications, standardization and sustainability. MBF provides a platform to collaborate and build a global network of maritime battery advocates.
