Trump is boosting MAGA X’s overseas accounts
A new feature on X has revealed that a number of MAGA’s main accounts on the platform are operated by people based overseas. And in the days since the accounts were leaked, President Donald Trump has continued to boost several of them.
Many of the accounts, which have large followings and claim to be Texas-based conservatives or “America First” accounts that “stand up to evil for good,” are actually run everywhere from Chile and Nigeria to Russia and across Eastern Europe.
These accounts mostly post about divisive issues, including immigration, gender, and Israel. In one instance, a verified account called MAGA NATION with approximately 400,000 followers and an American flag in its screen name was found to be operated from a non-EU country in Eastern Europe. Many accounts show the names of Trump family members, including Ivanka Trump’s news account with more than 1 million followers, which is based in Nigeria. The account has since been suspended.
On Saturday, Trump shared an image of an X post from an account called “Trump’s Army of Fans” on Truth Social. The account has more than 500,000 followers and has a picture of Trump as its profile picture. The account operator is based in India, according to the new X location feature. The account is followed by several people who have been convicted for their roles in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, as well as former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
In recent days, the account holder changed his bio to read: “An Indian who loves America, President Trump, Musk!” However, the previous version of the account bio had no mention of the account being managed by someone in India.
On Sunday, Trump shared another screenshot of an X post on Truth Social, this time from a verified X account with the page name: “Donald J. Trump Commentary.”
The screenshot reads: “Do you support the idea of banning foreign nationals from running for office? Yes or no.” The post also featured a picture of Rep. Ilhan Omar next to Omar Fateh, a Somali-American lawmaker in Minnesota who ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Minneapolis earlier this month. The account has a picture of the president as its profile picture and a bald eagle in front of the American flag as its background picture. According to the new X feature, this account appears to be running from somewhere in Africa. (In some cases, the X does not specify the country, only the continent or region.)
In response to Trump’s post, many called for a ban on foreign nationals holding political office, and some posters went further and called for Omar and Fatih to be fired.
