Premiere: Netflix’s new true-crime documentary delves into the mysterious disappearance of a mother

In September 2016, Nathan Carman went missing in a fishing boat with his mother near Block Island. A few days later, a cargo ship spotted Nathan on a lifeboat off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. He was saved. His mother, Linda, was never found.

According to his father, Karman was “the first grandson of a Greek dynasty,” and when questions arose after his rescue, suspicions arose that what happened at sea was not what he claimed.
Carmen’s grandfather, Linda’s father, had been shot to death several years before, and a lot of money was at stake. In the weeks after Carmen’s rescue, the story made headlines as investigators tried to piece together what happened. Some thought Carmen’s version of events didn’t add up, but her defenders pointed to the fact that she had autism spectrum disorder and could often be misunderstood.
In 2022, nearly a year after WIRED broke its story on the Carmen family, Nathan Carmen was accused of killing his mother in an alleged attempt to inherit her family’s vast fortune.
Directed by Yon Motskin, who made the UFO sighting documentary Encounters, Death of the Carmen family Produced by Camp Jesus Directors Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing, Mary Jane Mitchell and WIRED Studios.
