Trump calls ‘No Kings’ protests a ‘joke’: ‘I’m working my ass off’
President Trump on Sunday called this weekend’s “No Kings” demonstrations against him a “joke” and rejected suggestions that he is acting like a king.
“I’m not a king. I’m doing my best to make our country great. That’s all it is. I’m not a king at all,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned from Florida to Washington, D.C.
Millions of Americans gathered at “No Kings” events across the country on Saturday, in protest against Trump and his administration. Nearly 2,600 demonstrations were held in all 50 states, with huge events in cities including Washington, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Trump downplayed the significance of the protests on Sunday and suggested they were supported by wealthy Democratic donors.
“I think it’s a joke,” Trump told reporters when asked Sunday about the “No Kings” protests.
“I looked at the people – they don’t represent this country. And I looked at all the new signs… I think the price has been paid for before.” [George] Trump continued: “It appears to be the case. Soros and other extreme left-wing lunatics. It appears to be the case. We are checking it out.”
He added: “The demonstrations were very small, very ineffective, and people were beaten. When you look at these people, they do not represent the people of our country.”
Trump, in an interview recorded before the protests, also rejected the idea that he was acting like a king, saying: “They refer to me as a king. I’m not a king,” in an interview with Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
