Vermont Governor Scott calls on state senator to resign after report of GOP group chat
Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) called on a state senator to resign following a Politico report on a Republican youth group chat.
“The hateful statements made in this group chat are disgusting and unacceptable. The vile, racist, bigoted, and anti-Semitic dialogue reported is deeply disturbing. There is simply no excuse for it,” Scott said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Those involved should immediately resign from their roles and leave the Republican Party, including Vermont Senator Sam Douglas,” he added.
According to a Politico report, Vermont Sen. Samuel Douglas (right) was a member of a Telegram chat that included racist, anti-Semitic, and violent discussions.
When one chat member discussed that a friend of the other chatters had been in a relationship with “this very fat Indian woman for a while,” another responded, calling the woman “not Indian,” Politico reported.
“She didn’t shower often,” Douglas replied, according to Politico.
The messages obtained by POLITICO spanned more than seven months and were part of a conversation between young Republican leaders in New York, Kansas, Arizona and Vermont.
Members of the Telegram chat group titled “RESTOREYR WAR ROOM” referred to black people as “monkeys” and “watermelon people,” according to a Politico report published Tuesday. They also discussed putting political rivals in gas chambers and sexually assaulting opponents in the chat, Politico reported.
The chat also included racial slurs, and she reportedly said the rape was “epic,” according to the report.
A White House official told Politico that the White House had nothing to do with the group chat and that hundreds of groups were asking the White House for its endorsement.
The Hill has reached out to Douglas for comment.
