WFS signs warehouse lease agreement to expand Frankfurt services

  • WFS, a SATS company, is expanding its e-commerce and freight forwarder handling (EFFH) services at Frankfurt Airport with two new warehouses and offices on a 24,000 square meter site, and will begin operations in January 2026.
  • The new facilities will handle up to 100,000 tons of cargo per year and are equipped with ULD systems, scanners and simplified truck access to enhance efficiency for freight forwarders and e-commerce customers.
  • This expansion strengthens WFS’s European EFFH network, following recent growth in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris CDG, as demand for fast, low-touch cargo handling continues to rise.

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a SATS company, is expanding its specialist e-commerce and freight forwarder handling (EFFH) services at Frankfurt Airport, Europe’s largest cargo hub, after signing a long-term lease for two warehousing facilities starting in January 2026.

This investment will enable the expansion of the services offered by WFS in Frankfurt, and increase the ability to seize new opportunities with shipping, trucking and e-commerce companies that contribute to the continued growth in the region.

In 2024, freight volumes via Frankfurt rose 6.2% year-on-year to 2.1 million tons, supported by higher e-commerce volumes. Productivity continued to increase during the first half of 2025, an increase of another 1% over the previous year. WFS already has a long-term commitment to developing Frankfurt Airport through its subsidiary Frankfurt Cargo Services (FCS), which handles airlines, in partnership with Fraport.

Mark Claessen said: “As a major gateway for air freight, Frankfurt is a focal point for global freight forwarders as well as for large e-commerce shippers serving the German and European markets. As a leader in developing a new range of services to take advantage of the increasing complexity of the air freight value chain, WFS/SATS welcomes this opportunity to offer full EFFH services to customers in Frankfurt. Senior Vice President, Northern Europe and Africa at WFS. “Freight forwarders and e-commerce shippers value the efficiency, fewer touchpoints and faster productivity for all parties involved that our EFFH solutions provide, and we see strong growth potential in Frankfurt.”

Through this new lease, WFS will acquire two warehouses and two office buildings on a 24,000 square meter site within the airport’s Cargo City South precinct.

The facilities will be equipped with ULD handling systems and volume and dimensional scanners used to speed up the processing of shipments, and once fully operational, WFS will have the capacity to handle up to 100,000 tons of import and export shipments annually for e-commerce clients and freight forwarders.

The warehouse operations are strategically located at the entrance to Cargo City South, ideally positioned to efficiently handle truck transportation services between first-line facilities and freight forwarder depots in the Cargo City South area, as well as servicing international drivers – including those operating within WFS’s European route feeder service network.

In July, WFS also opened a new 4,800 square meter EFFH terminal at Copenhagen Airport, where it continues to expand its specialist service network.

WFS’s EFFH service makes freight ready for transport, capturing weight and cargo measurements, providing boxes, repacking, security screening, consolidation and labeling of shipments and transfer between freight forwarders and handling agents. It also covers dismantling and sorting imports and preparing shipments for customs clearance and ground transportation.

WFS also offers EFFH services in Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Liège, Madrid, Stockholm and at 12 airports across France, including Paris CDG.
