People try to “deprive” their Maga parents through the book clubs
Idea The start of a book club late in July came to Valeen Heinle. He argued with his supporter of the Israeli war in Gaza and its destructive effects on children.
Valeen, a 38 -year -old Democrat who works as a pet in Denver, wrote to his father after exchanging a series of posts about Gaza: “I ask you to learn and learn just something that is not from Facebook, Fox or Newsmax.” “Read a book about history there. I have the tones I can suggest but I know never because you prefer to sit in your confirmation prejudice, and that makes me upset.”
“I spend a lot of time worrying about my children. What a future will they bring for them,” he replied. “So when my kids are safe and [taken] Care then maybe I can fool other kids. “
Gaza is not the only thing that the Americans have left – and Valin and his father were divided. They have argued about the COVID-19 vaccine, climate change, weapons laws, 2020 election results, January 6 riots in Capitol and more. “Since 2016, he seems to be more and more to the right, and he is expressed with hatred and anger,” says Valin.
But Wallen said his response to their discussion of Gaza is a point. She was so upset that when her partner returned home that night, she found her crying on the Ikea sofa in the living room. They had a long conversation and, in an attempt to distract, they gathered deer cookies and animal chips and fired an anime on his laptop.
When the anime ended at about 3am, Valin sent his father, who now lives in central Florida, a message. “Well, I turn you into a deal: You read three books from my choice – you read all the way and prove that you really read and understand them,” he wrote. “And I go back to church a month later.”
Reddit is full of stories by people who, like Valin, who say the current political environment has challenged their relationships with his Trump’s supportive parents. In some cases, people have compared their families’ involvement in the Maga movement and the blind loyalty to Trump with part of a cult – a comparison by sect experts.
But some think that they can potentially save their relationships with their loved ones and even “deprive” their Maga parents – starting with “book clubs”.
A Reddit user posted in a popular Subredit R/SpundringMook, and asking for “good reading material for someone who may need help with reality and ethics” – their father. They specifically asked for fantasy books, a genre that their father enjoys in the past. “I have always felt that fantasy books have” progressive “values, and hopefully with that message I will find some of them not to pull you out of your head!” They wrote. In another subreddit, someone else asked for book recommendations that they could send him “to chase him out of the Trump cult”.
